1. pressed
2. printed
3. stamped

impressus is a small letterpress studio located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

We specialize in small runs of greeting cards for any occasion, prints, gift tags, and other paper goods, including personalized business cards and stationery. We also enjoy working with clients on custom orders. We would love to hear from you if you have an idea for a project or would like to collaborate in any way.

Each item is printed by hand on an antique printing press dating back to 1900s, the Golding Pearl Improved No.11. We use 100% cotton papers and envelopes and rubber-based inks. We work with metal type, wood type and photopolymer plates. When working with type, the text is composed by hand, letter by letter, and locked into the chase of the press, ready for printing. We also like experimenting with different textures, including wood veneer and fabric.

Our style is all about simple and streamlined designs. We agree with what Leonardo Da Vinci once said: “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”.

The beauty of letterpress is in the meticulousness of the printing process and the uniqueness of the final product. Given its tactile properties, it truly is the kind of printing you can feel! From hand-setting the type and hand-mixing the inks, to cutting paper and hand-feeding each sheet into the press, and then onto scoring each individual card or packaging orders, letterpress printing is a labour of love. And it shows.
